This past week Tilson PR hosted it’s second #TilsonBizChat with special guest Craig Agranoff, CBS12 Television News Contributor and author of ‘Do It Yourself Online Reputation Management: A Step-By-Step Guide To Building Or Repairing Your Online Reputation’ Agranoff shared some fantastic advice on how to build, maintain and repair online reputation. For those unable to participate we’ve put together a recap of the chat below:

Question One: What steps have you taken to manage your online reputation?

Those in attendance shared various steps they’ve taken to manage the online reputation of their business. Some of these included:

  • Secure business name url
  • Secure first and last name url
  • Set up Google Alerts to monitor for business name mentions
  • Monitor social platforms

Question Two: Craig, can you share some of the top reasons why businesses should care about their online reputation?

Craig shared several examples of what can happen when a business doesn’t pay close

enough attention to their online reputation. He pointed to the Ebay Motors Suck example

as well as Air Italia and Rachel Ray. Online reputation is something every business

should care about!

Question Three: What are the first steps to best manage online reputation?

Agranoff warns businesses they must get in front of their reputation and be proactive rather than reactive. Once negative posts are out there it can significantly damage any business.

Question Four: Are there things businesses should avoid when it comes to online reputation management?

Reputation management takes time and consistency. If you truly want to control your reputation online there is no one solution. If a company offers you a quick and easy solution it’s likely they’re selling you snake oil.

Question Five: Would you share some tips on how to be proactive and not reactive?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of profiles for you to create. Be sure to create profiles on the major platforms first: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google + and YouTube. Then start building simple profiles on the other, smaller, platforms. However, Agranoff warns not to do too many in one day, “Try not to do 3-4 a day, to avoid being deemed as spam”.

Question Six: What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve seen in reputation management?

Have you taken steps to secure your online reputation management? Do you have a plan in place for potential reputation crisis? Be sure to join us every third Thursday of the month for the Tilson Biz Chat on Twitter! It’s easy to participate and every month we interview different thought leaders on a variety of topics. Next month’s special guest will be Chris Dion, of the NCAA.
